PlayStation 4 Camera review

TechRadar rating

3.5/5

For

  • Works as advertised
  • The Playroom is amusing
  • Voice commands work well
  • Compact and attractive

Against

  • Few games use it
  • No gesture controls
  • Minimal voice commands
  • Face recognition more trouble than its worth

An extra purchase with no purpose

Sony put its adoring PlayStation fans in a tough spot when it chose to make the PlayStation Camera an optional accessory for the PS4.

Sure, it kept the cost of the console $100 cheaper than the Xbox One. That entices buyers and has earned the PS4 plenty of positive buzz from the media and players alike.

But now that the new Sony console is finally out, youre faced with a dilemma: to buy the PlayStation Camera or not?

No matter which way you look at it, thats not an easy question to answer, even for the most hardcore PlayStation fan.
PS Camera box
The PlayStation Camera is $59.99 - thats not chump change. In fact, its the cost of an extra controller, which can be the difference between having fun with a friend or playing by yourself.

And PS3 owners probably remember how little they used their PlayStation Eye cameras.

But if no one buys the PlayStation Camera now, then developers wont bother to implement it in their games, and the accessory will stagnate on store shelves until the next gimmick arrives.

No, its not an easy decision. So after playing with the PlayStation Camera over the weekend, we decided to break it down for you.

Design

Luckily for those who decide they just cant live without it, the PlayStation Camera is a sleek little accessory.
Its an unassuming black rectangular cube with two visible camera lenses and multiple other sensors, including microphones. But despite its odd segmented form the PS Camera doesnt look busy or awkward, like the PS3s PlayStation Eye camera or even the Xbox 360s Kinect.
PS Camer vs. PS4 controller
Its also much smaller than the Xbox Ones new Kinect sensor.

The only marking on the new PlayStation Camera is a small "PS" logo on one side, where no one will ever see it. In fact, most people will probably never notice it sitting by your TV.

It should fit nicely into most players entertainment systems, whether on its own or with the officially licensed (but not officially included) PS Camera clip.
ps camera clip
The clip may be worth it if your living room setup doesnt have any room for the small Camera. It features a minuscule nub and a sticky pad that allow it to snap easily and securely to the bottom of the Camera, and three firm but adjustable segments that let it wrap around a TVs upper edge.

This should allow the clip to work with most living room setups. And between the old and new Kinects, the Wii/Wii Us sensor bar, the PS3 Eye, and the new PlayStation Camera, power gamers environments are getting far too cluttered with cameras, so elevating one might be necessary or at least more aesthetically pleasing.

And even if the PS4 Camera is up high it will see your space with ease; it doesnt mechanically tilt on its own, like the old Xbox 360 Kinect would, but it can be rotated independently from the clip so that you can tilt it up or down to suit your setup.
PS Camera clip TV
Once the PlayStation Camera is plugged into the back of your PS4 youll probably forget that its there - until it comes time to use it, that is.

Interface

Its not a secret that the PlayStation Camera is not nearly as advanced as the Xbox Ones new Kinect sensor.

But it does provide some of the same functionality for the PS4, albeit in a far more limited capacity.

When you log into the PS4 for the first time the console will check whether you have a PlayStation Camera and ask whether you want to run face recognition setup. It will tell you to brighten the room and sit a certain distance away from the Camera, and then away you go.
PS Camera select yourself
The Camera is quite good at detecting faces, even with multiple people in the room. Once its had a look around it asks you to point out for it which face is yours, and then youre run through a one-time program that will help the system recognize your face automatically later on.

Youre asked to follow along with an on-screen box as it tilts and rotates, moving your head so that the PS4 Camera can view your visage from multiple angles. Its painless and once its done you wont have to do it again.
PS Camera face boxes
That said, if you do run the setup program again from the settings menu it will add to the face data for your profile, not replace it, so that it can recognize you with even more accuracy.

The PlayStation Camera wont automatically recognize everyone who walks by like the Xbox One Kinect does, but it does recognize you on start-up if the PS4 is not set to automatically log in one user.

When thats the case, the system asks you to choose a profile when you turn it on. But if facial recognition is on and the Camera detects anyone it knows, it will enlarge the image it sees and ask the person who wishes to log in to hold up a PS4 controller under his or her chin.
PS Camera light bar
Its unfortunate that the PlayStation Camera cant simply log users in automatically when it recognizes them, and to be honest its a lot easier to simply select your profile manually, even with multiple users in the room.
Anyway, after the log-in process the PlayStation Camera can recognize a few rudimentary voice commands.

From the home screen, you can say "PlayStation, start" to open the selected application, "PlayStation, log in" to change profiles, "PlayStation, take screenshot," "PlayStation, back to game" if youve already opened a game, or "PlayStation, power" to access controls that let you turn the console off or put it into standby mode. When in an app or game you can say "PlayStation, home screen" to go back to the dashboard.
PS Camera setup
These commands work pretty consistently. Unless the TV volume is up too loud or others in the room are speaking, the PlayStation Camera will almost always recognize your words.

That said, most of those actions can be carried out just as easily, if not more easily, using a controller. Taking a screenshot is just a matter of holding the Share button on the DualShock 4 controller.

At this point there are no gesture controls, so the minimal voice commands and face recognition are all the PlayStation Camera gives you at a system level. Thats a shame, since the Camera seems to be quite good at detecting players movements.

Games

The PlayStation Camera seems to be about on par with the original Xbox 360 Kinect in terms of recognizing players movements. Granted, thats just based on a single game, and its a game that was designed to use the PlayStation Camera in the first place: The Playroom.

The Playroom is included on every PS4 by default. This is where Sonys decision-making gets foggy; was The Playroom always meant to be a pack-in, from a time when the Camera would have been as well? Or did Sony decide to include the game on every system in order to entice more early PS4 buyers to purchase the PS Camera as well?
PS Camera pong
Either way, The Playroom should have been included with the PlayStation Camera, not the PS4 itself, if anything.

Its not even really a game; its more a tech demo. It has five functions, only three of which are actually interactive. Of those, only one is really a game, and its entertaining for about five minutes tops.
PS Camera light bar showoff
The Playroom has two setup applications that show off some of the new PS4 controllers functions, including its light bar, touchpad, rumble feedback motors, motion controls, and speaker, and help you configure your room so the Camera gets the optimal view.

Beyond that, two applications let you play with virtual robots and a final one is a quirky version of two-player Pong.

AR Bots is easily the most entertaining of these. Swiping up on the controllers touchpad causes small robots to jump out of it. The TV shows an image of your living room, which you can populate with the hapless little buggers.
AR Bots
People in the room can then flail their limbs around, kicking and punching the robots as theyre hurled around the screen.

Pressing the touchpad in (it clicks like a button) vacuums the bots back into the controller. You can join them with a downward swipe on the touchpad; the inside of the controller looks strangely like the inside of a controller, and you can jostle the little guys around by tilting the gamepad.

Once in a while, a giant rubber duck comes out of the controller instead of a robot. Its not clear why.
AR Bots inside controller
The other robot-centric application, Play With Asobi, is less entertaining. A cute droid named Asobi flits around your head, reacting to your "touch" with a variety of facial expressions and motions.

Punching Asobi will make it angry, and it often responds by zapping your head with electricity, frying it with a laser, or freezing it in place. Yes, the PlayStation Camera is good at recognizing faces. We get it!
Asobi head
Finally, the Pong game is just that. It requires two controllers and the PlayStation Camera, or in other words over $120 of additional accessories that dont come with the console.

Both players control their paddles using the gamepads touchscreen, and tilting the controller warps the play area accordingly. You wont be showing this off to your friends.

The Playroom is cute - especially the AR Bots application.

But is it worth buying a PlayStation Camera for? Absolutely not.
So what is?

The only other game that makes any extensive use of the PlayStation Camera at this time is Just Dance 2014, and thats not a good sign.
just dance 2014
Keep in mind there are a full two dozen PS4 launch games (including The Playroom). And Just Dance 2014 is available on multiple platforms.

And as if that wasnt bad enough, the Camera isnt even required to play Just Dance 2014 on the PS4. PS3 owners can just use the old PS Move controllers they may or may not have lying around.
So The Playroom is amusing but shallow, and Just Dance 2014 is relatively niche and doesnt even technically require the Camera. Anything else?

Actually, NBA 2K14 will reportedly give you a penalty for swearing if you yell out a curse word during a game when the PlayStation Camera is plugged in, according to this Reddit thread.
But is that something you even want happening? We think not.

We liked

The PS Camera is more than functional; it actually works quite well when it comes to recognizing users faces and voice commands. Telling the PS4 vocally to turn off or perform other functions can sometimes be more convenient than pressing buttons.

In fact, from whats currently available to test it seems to be more accurate at detecting players and recognizing voice commands than even the Xbox 360s Kinect was.
PS Camera lenses
In addition, The Playroom provided some solid entertainment, however short-lived. It appears the device has some potential.

TiVo Roamio Pro review

Minggu, 09 Februari 2014

The good: The TiVo Roamio Pro is the companys most powerful DVR to date with six tuners; 450 hours of HD storage; a healthy selection of streaming video, music, and photo services; a best-in-class DVR experience; the capability to stream and download to iOS devices; and easy expansion to other rooms with TiVo Mini extenders.

The bad: Cable cutters and satellite subscribers will be disappointed that the Roamio Plus and Pro work with digital cable and Verizon Fios only. Only viewers in select Comcast markets can access their providers pay-per-view or VOD content. The price is steep: $600 plus $15 a month (or $500 for lifetime service). While there are plenty of available streaming options, key services like Amazon Prime and HBO Go are still
 missing.

The bottom line: If youre willing to pay the premium price, TiVos do-it-all Roamio is the best cable DVR yet and an able whole-home TV solution.

For some time now, TiVo has been trying to become a whole-home entertainment solution. With the all-in-one TiVo Roamio Pro DVR, it has done just that.
Though I dont know that its wise to name a product after something that has an indelible relationship to a tragedy, the companys newest DVR goes hard-drive-to-hard-drive with Dishs Hopper with Sling, offering lots of tuners, tons of storage, and options for sending content to other rooms without buying additional DVRs. It also makes it easier to load up your mobile devices (at least, iOS ones for now) with recordings.

The Roamio boxes further sweeten the on-demand video pot with a heavy dollop of online video options, including Netflix, Hulu Plus, and YouTube, meaning you can jump to those services -- and search them -- without having to switch the input on your TV.

Unlike the Hopper, the new TiVo wont automatically skip ads or record every prime-time network show, but at least you can use it with your current cable service.

Of course, all this TV-viewing pleasure comes at a price -- or three prices, to be exact: the $200 baseline Roamio, the $400 Roamio Plus, and the $600 Roamio Pro. And -- as usual with TiVo -- youll still need to sign up for monthly or lifetime service, $14.99 or $499.99, respectively. (And youll still have your existing cable bill on top of that, unless you use the over-the-air antenna option available on the entry-level model.)
Still, for serious TV junkies, this is a DVR worth ponying up for.

The TiVo advantage

These days, digital video recorders arent anything special -- cable and satellite companies rent them to their customers for a few bucks a month, and said customers can time-shift their favorite programs to watch at their convenience. So, why invest in a TiVo? Basically, its the same reason youd pay extra for a Mac versus a Windows PC: for starters, that means a best-in-class user interface and ease of use.

Beyond the standard DVR features of pausing and rewinding live TV, TiVos got a wealth of less common (and better implemented) TV-recording features:
EPG: All digital cable and satellite boxes and DVRs offer an onscreen EPG (electronic programming guide), but TiVos steps it up a notch, with a degree of customization and configuration that most cable company DVRs dont offer.
The guide extends 14 days into the future, and it can be displayed as a standard grid or as a split-screen Live Guide, which breaks out several hours of program information from each channel on the right half of the screen. You also have access to a grid-style miniguide on the bottom of the screen, overlaid on top of what youre currently viewing.
(Credit: TiVo)

Season Pass: The TiVo Season Pass function lets you record every episode of a favorite show within the parameters you set. For instance, you can record every "CSI" episode on any channel and keep only the five most recent episodes, or you can record only the new (nonrerun) episodes in prime time, or both. This function has mostly been imitated by other DVRs, but TiVos Season Pass is generally more accurate and reliable than other cable DVR models, especially at delineating between new episodes and reruns, or adjusting if a show changes its time slot.

Wish List: The Wish List is just what it sounds like: you choose an actor, director, genre, or keyword, and TiVo will record any program that involves that keyword. Again, this feature is also available on other DVRs, but TiVos implementation still tends to be easier to use than other versions weve seen.

TiVo Suggestions: By default, TiVo also uses your TV downtime -- overnight, when youre at work, and so forth -- to record programs based on interests you express by using the thumbs-up and thumbs-down button on your remote. The more you vote on your viewing choices, the better your TiVo will become at finding similar, related programming, which it duly labels TiVo Suggestions. Some may object to this functionality as invasive or overkill -- which is why it can be easily turned off -- but for anyone who laments that theres never anything on TV, its worth trying.

Collections:TiVo assembles collections of TV shows and movies based on themes. For example, for fall season premieres, TiVo collected all the new and returning shows into two collections. With a couple -- and I mean a couple -- button presses, TiVo will schedule everything in the collections to record. No hunting around for specific times and start dates or anything, its all just set to record. And if youd like to customize the Collections, you can do that, too.

What to Watch Now:Ever turn on the TV and youre just not sure what you want to watch? Select What to Watch Now and youre given a thumbnail look at the top 20 most popular shows airing in that time slot. You can also filter it by Sports, Movies, and Kids. Similarly, channel guide information -- whether you use TiVos Live Guide or Grid Guide format -- can be filtered to help you quickly find what youre looking for. If, for example, you just want to see what movies are on, it will pull all the other channels out of your way so you can see what movies are currently showing.

Search:TiVos Search is awesome. It ties all of the content from streaming services and your TV schedule together. This allows you to get search results cross-referenced across all video sources, that is TV and online. So, if you search for a show -- say, "New Girl" -- youll get upcoming first-run and rerun episodes on TV, plus episode-by-episode lists (organized by season) of the shows on Netflix (and Amazon and Hulu Plus, if the shows in question are also available there).

What the Roamio offers
Performance is probably one of the biggest issues for a lot of TiVo users. When TiVo switched over to its HD interface for its 2010 Premiere DVR, doing anything with it -- from opening up the guide to navigating through recorded programs to accessing any of the extra services -- seemingly took forever in TV-surfing time. Not good for a product with a premium price tag.

With the later Premiere 4 and XL4 boxes, performance improved, but it still took a second or two to populate some screens, moving through the guide had the occasional delay, and launching apps or starting playback of a recording wasnt exactly snappy. The experience was not what I would consider painful, but there were certainly times of frustration.

The Roamio DVRs are completely new systems with faster processors, built to handle the demands of all of their features. TiVo claims performance is 1.5 to 2.5 times faster, averaging 1.7 times faster. And, in use, it is noticeably faster. That goes for navigation, launching apps, and everything else. Boot time, by the way, remains long. Maybe not as long as for the Premiere, but its still a wait. Fortunately, its been stable throughout a month of testing with no random reboots or freezing.

Multiroom viewing has long been an option for two or more network-connected TiVo units, Series 2 or newer. However, TiVo has spent the past couple of years adding features to its DVRs and extending its product line to make it truly a whole-home solution.

The introductions of the TiVo Stream and TiVo Mini were the first steps toward that goal. And now the Roamio takes everything up another notch.
(Credit: Joshua Goldman/CNET)

Conflict resolution
TiVo released its first four-tuner DVRs in 2012, the Premiere 4 and Premiere XL4, and kept an updated two-tuner Premiere in the lineup as its entry-level DVR. Unfortunately, that base model was the only option if you wanted to use an antenna for OTA (over-the-air) TV.

As mentioned above, the Roamio lineup consists of three models: Roamio, Roamio Plus, and Roamio Pro. The base model continues to be the only one that can be used with an antenna or a CableCard (they cannot be used at the same time), whereas the Plus and Pro require a CableCard (digital cable and Verizon Fios only; it does not support analog cable, satellite, or AT&T U-verse). Now, though, the base Roamio can record four programs (again, ATSC or CableCard) at once while you watch a fifth recorded show. The Plus and Pro can record up to six shows at once with a multistream CableCard.

The extra tuners not only come in handy for dealing with conflicts (with programming and people), but can be used to stream live TV to TiVo Mini units on your network. But its not just the number of tuners or even storage that separates the models.

By comparison, the aforementioned Dish Hopper has three tuners, but one of them can record all four major networks simultaneously. Its the Hoppers ability to autoskip the commercials in those recordings that has focused the legal ire of those same networks -- including CNET owner CBS -- on Dish in a still-ongoing legal battle.

As you can see, these boxes arent cheap. And, as always, youre not just paying for the box, you have to sign up for monthly or lifetime service, $14.99 or $499.99, respectively. The Roamio does offer a lot in one box, though.

Holy $#!*, its got Wi-Fi
Yes, you can stop rubbing your eyes, you read the chart correctly. After years of making users buy USB Wi-Fi adapters (seemingly overpriced ones, at that) to get wireless Internet access, TiVo has finally built in 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi. Although the Wi-Fi cant be used for streaming between TiVo units because of bandwidth demands, it can be used for everything else -- from updating guide data to streaming Netflix to using TiVos iOS or Android app to control the box.

Genius Ergo 555 Laser review

Kamis, 30 Januari 2014

The gaming mouse has been around for a while but is constantly being tweaked and refined to offer that extra competitive edge. Genius has been pretty active in this market. Its latest offering is the Ergo 555 Laser, capable of a handling a range of dpi settings from 400 up to an impressive 3,200. Its a wired USB mouse featuring a cloth cabling thats supposed to be more flexible and less likely to restrict your movement at that critical juncture.
The rest of the admittedly stylish design includes a smooth rubber grip, a total of 10 control buttons with scroll wheel and an innovative OLED display that reports the current profile settings. Our first impressions were that the mouse was extremely light, and theres no provision here for adding weight as seen in some rival products in this range. This is something you get used to, though, and few but the most finicky of gamers would find it has much of an impact on performance.
