Kaplan builds online education platform KAPx with Google App Engine

Charlie describes why Kaplan chose Google App Engine as the foundation for a scalable, flexible, and robust education platform that allows anyone to easily deliver learning content in both live and recorded formats.



The Drivers for Change

Ongoing disruptions in the Higher Education space -- including open courses, free content, regulatory pressures and protests over the increasing cost of education -- have spurred students to look for alternative paths to achieving their education and career goals and have driven institutions to look for innovative ways to lower the cost of education.



In response, Kaplan launched the KAPx initiative, whose original objective was to develop a scalable and robust platform for delivering content effectively to large audiences, using only low-cost and open components. Initial prototypes relied on traditional development technologies or required significant investments in infrastructure. When developers began to load-test these prototypes, the team recognized that Google App Engine could scale faster and further than the other products being used. So the decision was made to port the whole thing to Google App Engine.



First impressions with Google App Engine

Our initial introduction to Google App Engine was a real-time commenting service that we designed around the Channel API. While load testing our prototypes, we immediately saw that Google App Engine could scale faster and further than the rest of our solution. At that point we decided to port the entire application to the Google App Engine platform.



Using HTML templates, the NoSQL datastore, and memcache for dynamic web content, three engineers with zero python experience were able to port the application and go from prototype to production in just three weeks. The team also leveraged task queues to manage message distribution and the channel API for real-time message delivery. It was App Engine’s tight integration of these components and associated Python libraries that simplified typically tedious tasks and allowed us to flatten out the learning curve.

Adding on Google Hangouts & Google Apps

With Google App Engine powering the scalable foundation for KAPx, we leveraged Google Hangouts on Air for live streaming video and built a Hangouts App for the presenter to interact with participants. We also turned to Google Apps -- Docs, Presentations, and Drawings -- and the Google Drive Picker API to allow the presenter to select, share, and incorporate lecture materials into the live experience

App Engine provided us with the tools to rapidly go from concept to production at lightning speed, without the overhead of managing a traditional infrastructure or the need to wire up disparate technologies. After starting out with live lecture delivery on KAPx, the flexibility and ease of development on Google App Engine has allowed us to expand quickly, tackling structured learning with our first set of open courses for Kaplan University and a completely new online institution, Mount Washington College.



Tips for getting started with Google App Engine

1. There are many excellent examples of App Engine solutions in the GoogleCloudPlatform repository on GitHub to get you started.


2. Use webapp2 and the jinja2 template engine for serving up content unless you need something heavier. This lightweight but flexible combination is simple to use and provides an easy way to deliver MVC style HTML templates as well as raw data for RESTful APIs.


3. Use the NDB datastore libraries to get memcache for free. NDB was experimental when we first launched our platform, so we went with GAE’s DB datastore having to write our own handlers for front loading DB queries with memcache. With NDB, this is provided for you, dramatically improving performance and shortening development time.


4. Plan ahead if you are going to need to aggregate data (join, counts, etc). Operations that you would typically rely on in a relational database (joins, groupings and aggregate functions) are not as straightforward when working with the NoSQL DB or NDB datastore. You’ll want to plan out your models with the appropriate keys / properties to support aggregation in code foregoing joins and grouping when possible.


5. When relying heavily on the built in datastore and memcache implementations, you’ll want to understand their upper limits and design around them. There are excellent articles available on eventual consistency, sharding data, reducing datastore contention, async task queues, and MapReduce in the developers.google.com/appengine site that can provide you with techniques to work within the boundries of service quotas and the constraints of a highly scalable environment.


6. Invest time upfront to set up automated extracts of your log data to Google BigQuery on a regular basis. This will pay huge dividends the first time you need to track down a bug in production, as the dashboard tools out of the box are cumbersome to work with at scale.


7. Use the --datastore_consistency_policy=random option on dev_appserver.py when developing locally to identify potential problems with delayed datastore writes before deploying.

LG G Flex announced for 20 European countries with February launch

LG, soon after announcing that its curved G Flex smartphone will hit the US market by April, has now announced the release of the device in 20 European markets.

The South Korean handset manufacturer has announced that its LG G Flex smartphone will be available in major European markets (including Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden and UK among others) in February.

As of now, LGs much-hyped smartphone, the G Flex has only been available in markets like Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore. Recently, the company announced the availability of the G Flex in US via partnership with mobile carriers AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile.

Unfortunately, LG is yet to reveal the precise availability of the G Flex smartphone for the Indian market. Earlier, LG announced that the G Flex would be available in India starting February; however, there is no word on the pricing of the curved smartphone from LG.

Commenting on the announcement, Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company said, "The introduction of the LG G Flex in Europe demonstrates our confidence in the global marketplace for a curved smartphone. As a premium smartphone, the G Flex will further establish LG as a brand that offers something unique for every consumer segment. This is a device that is guaranteed to start a conversation wherever it goes."

LG launched the G Flex in October last year with much fanfare, and it was rolled out only in South Korea initially.

The Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean-based G Flex features a 6-inch display and is powered by a quad-core 2.26GHz Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974) processor, an Adreno 330 GPU, and 2GB of RAM. It features a 13-megapixel rear camera, and a 2.1-megapixel rear camera. The G Flex is backed by a 3,500mAh battery, weighs 177 grams, and is 7.9mm at its thinnest, while being 8.7mm at its thickest.

LG has also included a new self-healing coating on the back cover, an elastic coating that supposedly has the ability to "recover from the daily wear-and-tear scratches and nicks that un-cased smartphones are likely to receive."

  Samsungs Galaxy S5 will be stylistically distinct from S3 and S4 predecessors, and the next-generation flagship Android phone could include an iris scanner when it ships in March or April, according to the companys mobile-products leader.

"Many people are fanatical about iris recognition technology... We are studying the possibility," said Young-hee Lee, executive vice president of marketing for Samsung mobiles division, in a Bloomberg News interview at the CES conference in Las Vegas published Thursday.

Iris scanners can identify a person based on patterns in the eye, and adding one would be a competitive response to the fingerprint scanner in Apples iPhone 5S and HTC One Max. For the iris scanner to be more than a gimmick, though, it would have to work effectively to avoid criticisms such as those leveled at the HTC One Maxs fingerprint authentication mechanism.

Samsung had planned to include a fingerprint scanner in the Galaxy Note 3, a phablet released in September, but backed off the idea because it wasnt reliable enough, sources have told CNET.

The S5 should look different, too: "When we moved to S4 from S3, its partly true that consumers couldnt really feel much difference between the two products from the physical perspective, so the market reaction wasnt as big," Lee told Bloomberg. "For the S5, we will go back to the basics. Mostly, its about the display and the feel of the cover." 

The S5 will be released a year after the S4, in March or April, Lee said. At the same time, a successor to the Gear smartwatch will arrive thatll be less bulky and have more advanced features, according to Lee. Sources have told CNET that the Gear successor is due in March, including a higher-quality screen.
Lee also said a new Galaxy Note smartphone for higher-end customers will arrive in the second half of 2014.

Sony’s Dock for the Sirius aka Xperia Z2 Leaks Out With Magnetic Charging Pins

It’s been about a year since Sony has started putting magnetic charging pins on their devices. Which are also known as pogo pins. They were on the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 as well. Those pins are normally used for docks, so they are able to charge your device, while you’re watching a movie, or whatever with the device on the dock. it’s actually pretty cool. Of course the pogo pins are on the Xperia Z1s as well, but this new leak seems to point towards it supporting the Xperia Z2 or Sirius, more than the Xperia Z1s. Not that it wouldn’t support it anyways.

The newly leaked charging dock is the DK36, which is supposedly going to be launched with a new flagship device, that has not been announced yet. The dock was revealed in a leaked user guide which shows off the general usability of the accessory. There’s nothing too exciting about this dock, it is a dock after all. However, what is exciting is the smartphone it’s made to hold.

It appears that right now the DK30-33 are for the Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1, and Xperia Z1 Compact, respectively. The DK34-35 seem like they are for the unannounced D6603 and D6503 smartphones, which are likely to be announced at Mobile World Congress next month. But this is where things get a little crazy. Is we’ve heard that the Xperia Z2 is codenamed Sirius, and i the DK36 is for the Xperia Z2, then what about the DK34-35? Are those two more phones that Sony is planning on announcing at Mobile World Congress? I wouldn’t put it past them, but it’s still a bit strange.

Hopefully this dock will launch alongside the phone. So those that purchase the phone can grab this as well. How many of you are looking to grab this dock with your new Xperia Z2, or whatever they name the Sirius device?
