Mary Lea Bradleys art is immediately striking. Her abstract paintings are characterized by a sense of mystery that invites the viewer in. The paintings transport you from reality to a vibrant, mystical world where you are the story teller, creating and interpreting your own stories.
Excited about her newest work, yet unpretentious about her artistic flair and sophisticated eye, Bradley and her work are very approachable and accessible.

MicroApps from The Guardian and Google AppEngine Both ready for business
Jumat, 14 Maret 2014
di 14.45 0 komentar Label: and, appengine, both, business, for, from, google, guardian, microapps, ready, theThis post is another entry in our on-going series of guest posts from App Engine developers. Today we have the Guardian reporting in on how theyre using App Engine as part of their Open Platform.
There has been a lot of debate recently about the future of news online, some people like The Times of London and New York Times think paywalls are the answer, others are not so sure. At The Guardian we have a clear alternative and vision, we call it mutualisation. Its all about reducing the barriers between our journalists and readers and between our organisation and our partners. For software developers and online businesses we have a product sitting just in this space which we call the Open Platform.
The Open Platform has been in beta for the last year and now, today it is officially "Open for Business". Open for developers to take and co-monetize our content with us, building new applications for distributing and consuming news. It is also open for partners to build new experiences which blend content from The Guardian and their own functionality and in some cases brands into the heart of The Guardians award winning website.
Today were launching a brand new product and framework called MicroApps which the diagram above describes. However, just as Google dogfoods its new products before launch, so do we, and we wanted to share some of the things weve been building as MicroApps using Google AppEngine for the storage and application development part.
With 36 million unique and very engaged readers, everything we make has to scale, which is why AppEngine is ideal. With its highly scalable architecture and features such as task queues, built for creating loosely coupled apps, and memcache, AppEngine makes an excellent companion platform for MicroApps in which the apps can run anywhere in the cloud. The examples presented here range from new ways to find content which others are finding exciting or interesting, to live responses to the TV debates to ways to bring together all of the tweets of our journalists on specific subjects.
Zeitgeist
Many people are interested in what is hot in the news and what is trending. We think this is interesting, but something a bit more interesting is in the things which are unexpectedly popular. Dan Catt used AppEngine to pull together signals from sources such as OneRiot, Twitter, comments in our system and our own internal stats to create an index of Zeitgeisty-ness. For the full "science bit" please see this overview article. Were using AppEngine for the storage and processing of a lot of data, with several task queues in play to create a page which responds over time during the current day showing you what peoples attention think is the most interesting content. At the end of the day these are all archived and available so you can see what the Zeitgeist was on a particular day. The MicroApp framework allows us to host all of the application on AppEngine and display it in the network pages as if it were coming out of the content management system. This allows us to build data heavy applications using the economy of scale of cloud computing platforms while not affecting the scalability of the core site. If you want to see exactly how we made Zeitgeist, Dan talks about it here.
Election Debate Live Poll
There was recently a general election in the UK and for the first time in the UK there were a series of debates about the party platforms from the leaders of the three main parties. We felt that it would be good to capture the mood of the nation by allowing people to simply click a "+" or a "-" as to whether they liked or disliked what a leader said. This was then to be displayed as a sentiment "worm" alongside the video. Michael Brunton Spall created an AppEngine app which allowed us to scale rapidly and sustainably for the duration of the debates. At one point in time in the second debate the AJAX calls from the buttons were peaking at around 750 requests per second with an average of 454 requests per second. In total over the hour and a half of the debate over 2.7 million requests were made on the AJAX voting services which made heavy use of memcache and sharded counters. This sort of temporary load would have required a vast amount of additional temporary infrastructure for us and planning. AppEngine made that simple.
Twitter Collation
Just before The Edinburgh Festival, a really rather huge arts festival in the UK, we had a hackday and Stephen Abbott made a suggestion for something that it would be nice to see was an app that would allow the tweets about the festival of a collection of journalists and performers we trusted to be pulled together in one stream. This would need a double white list to be created, one where only if they were in the collection and they mentioned the keyword would your tweet make it into the stream. This is clearly to avoid spam and unwanted messages and to filter out journalists from talking about what theyd had for breakfast (unless it was festival related). In 24 hours using AppEngine Chris Thorpe had built a machine which fanned out queries from regular cron job which hauled in the stream of each journalist and performer (each in a single task queue action) and then processed each tweet asynchronously (again each in a single task queue action). The app performed well and was then industrialized as a MicroApp by Michael Brunton Spall and Lisa van Gelder and has been used throughout the general election and to bring together tweets from journalists within sections. Were now following and processing the streams of a large number of our journalists and are creating views of those streams with multiple watched keywords. The view of the stream can then be inserted into pages just like the one below using AppEngine and our MicroApp framework with memcache used to keep the response time fast.
Random Guardian
A flippant comment, in a serious question from Chris Thorpe to Clay Shirky, when he visited us recently at The Guardian, about where the new serendipity was in news, contained the phrase "should we just build Chatroulette for news?" He said that yes, we should definitely do that and in about 2 hours and using the beta of our new APIs, Daniel Vydra had done just that in AppEngine. The application has been hugely successful at introducing people to parts of the site theyve never visited before and has led to people being mildly addicted to discovering things they never knew they needed to know, just at the click of a button. Were open sourcing the code for it very soon, so you too can start experimenting.
The MicroApp platform wouldnt exist without the hard work and brilliance of a team including Matthew Wall, Matt McAlister, Stephen Dunn, Mike Bracken, Graham Tackley, Stephen Wells and Simon Willison. Were now open for business and to prove it were holding a hackday where were making some very rapid prototypes for media agencies. Who knows, they may like them so much as concepts they commission them and well have to put them into production. Thatll be fine for us, with the tools we use and the platform we have we know we have an environment to scale.

MT657x MT6515 MT6575 MT6577 flashing tutorial
Kamis, 13 Maret 2014
di 17.46 0 komentar Label: flashing, mt6515, mt6575, mt6577, mt657x, tutorialNow that the new MediaTek SoC has been released, it is time to publish the instructions on how to flash your MT65x5 (MT6515 and MT6575) based phone. Please note that the images shown on this tutorial are just examples and that you must flash your phone with the correct ROM files.
Make sure that you read everything carefully and know what you are doing. Dont blame me for any damage that may occur on your phone.
Update: By the time that this tutorial was written only MT65x5 was available. Current MT6577 based phones can also be flashed using the exact same method, so this has just been updated with references to that most recent SoC.
Whats needed:
- USB data cable
- MediaTek USB VCOM drivers
- SP Flash Tool (v3.1206.01 or higher for MT6575 / v3.1222.00 or higher for MT6577)
Note: SP Flash Tool is backward compatible, which means you can (and should) use the most up to date version.
And now the tutorial...
- First of all, make sure that you have MediaTek DA USB VCOM drivers installed.
Flashing the whole ROM
- First of all open SP Flash Tool, then click Scatter-loading button to load the correct scatter file (MT6575_Android_scatter_emmc.txt or MT6577_Android_scatter_emmc.txt, depending on which phone you have) for your device and ignore any message that may appear.
- Turn off your phone, remove the battery and replace it after some seconds (and dont turn on the phone).
- Press F9 (or hit Download button) and connect your phone into the computer via USB data cable. The process will start and a red progress bar will appear.
- After the red progress bar is complete, there will appear a purple progress bar.
- Right after the purple progress bar is complete, a message will appear underneath it: “Please insert USB cable in x seconds” and then the download will start right away (you will see the yellow progress bar filling up).
- When the yellow bar is complete, youll get a popup with a green circle and Download OK message, which means that the process has been successfully terminated.
- You can now safely disconnect your phone and turn it on. The process ends here.
Flashing only part of the ROM
- In case you want to flash just one part of the ROM, that is also possible. In the shown example, only recovery image will be flashed. Deselect all parts except the one(s) you want to flash and then press F9 (or hit Download button).
- The tool will immediately show a warning because not all parts are selected, but you should continue anyway. Safely press Yes to continue.
- The download of the chosen partition image will start and after the yellow bar is complete, the popup with the green circle should appear.
- Please note that, even though it isnt mandatory to select it on the list of images to flash, preloader file must be present in the same folder as the other partition(s) that you want to flash, or else phone will not be able to enter into download mode.
Attention: Please follow the instructions carefully. I will not take any responsibility on whatever may happen with your phone.
Very important warning: Always make sure that you trust the sources of the ROM you download and know that it is meant for your phone. After flashing a wrong preloader, your phone will be completely dead (cant be powered on, it will not charge and wont be detected anymore by the computer) and there is no way to recover it.
Kaplan builds online education platform KAPx with Google App Engine

Ongoing disruptions in the Higher Education space -- including open courses, free content, regulatory pressures and protests over the increasing cost of education -- have spurred students to look for alternative paths to achieving their education and career goals and have driven institutions to look for innovative ways to lower the cost of education.
In response, Kaplan launched the KAPx initiative, whose original objective was to develop a scalable and robust platform for delivering content effectively to large audiences, using only low-cost and open components. Initial prototypes relied on traditional development technologies or required significant investments in infrastructure. When developers began to load-test these prototypes, the team recognized that Google App Engine could scale faster and further than the other products being used. So the decision was made to port the whole thing to Google App Engine.
First impressions with Google App Engine
Our initial introduction to Google App Engine was a real-time commenting service that we designed around the Channel API. While load testing our prototypes, we immediately saw that Google App Engine could scale faster and further than the rest of our solution. At that point we decided to port the entire application to the Google App Engine platform.
Using HTML templates, the NoSQL datastore, and memcache for dynamic web content, three engineers with zero python experience were able to port the application and go from prototype to production in just three weeks. The team also leveraged task queues to manage message distribution and the channel API for real-time message delivery. It was App Engine’s tight integration of these components and associated Python libraries that simplified typically tedious tasks and allowed us to flatten out the learning curve.
Adding on Google Hangouts & Google Apps
With Google App Engine powering the scalable foundation for KAPx, we leveraged Google Hangouts on Air for live streaming video and built a Hangouts App for the presenter to interact with participants. We also turned to Google Apps -- Docs, Presentations, and Drawings -- and the Google Drive Picker API to allow the presenter to select, share, and incorporate lecture materials into the live experience
App Engine provided us with the tools to rapidly go from concept to production at lightning speed, without the overhead of managing a traditional infrastructure or the need to wire up disparate technologies. After starting out with live lecture delivery on KAPx, the flexibility and ease of development on Google App Engine has allowed us to expand quickly, tackling structured learning with our first set of open courses for Kaplan University and a completely new online institution, Mount Washington College.
Tips for getting started with Google App Engine
- There are many excellent examples of App Engine solutions in the GoogleCloudPlatform repository on GitHub to get you started.
- Use webapp2 and the jinja2 template engine for serving up content unless you need something heavier. This lightweight but flexible combination is simple to use and provides an easy way to deliver MVC style HTML templates as well as raw data for RESTful APIs.
- Use the NDB datastore libraries to get memcache for free. NDB was experimental when we first launched our platform, so we went with GAE’s DB datastore having to write our own handlers for front loading DB queries with memcache. With NDB, this is provided for you, dramatically improving performance and shortening development time.
- Plan ahead if you are going to need to aggregate data (join, counts, etc). Operations that you would typically rely on in a relational database (joins, groupings and aggregate functions) are not as straightforward when working with the NoSQL DB or NDB datastore. You’ll want to plan out your models with the appropriate keys / properties to support aggregation in code foregoing joins and grouping when possible.
- When relying heavily on the built in datastore and memcache implementations, you’ll want to understand their upper limits and design around them. There are excellent articles available on eventual consistency, sharding data, reducing datastore contention, async task queues, and MapReduce in the developers.google.com/appengine site that can provide you with techniques to work within the boundries of service quotas and the constraints of a highly scalable environment.
- Invest time upfront to set up automated extracts of your log data to Google BigQuery on a regular basis. This will pay huge dividends the first time you need to track down a bug in production, as the dashboard tools out of the box are cumbersome to work with at scale.
- Use the --datastore_consistency_policy=random option on dev_appserver.py when developing locally to identify potential problems with delayed datastore writes before deploying.

Sears Closing Flagship Chicago Store
Along with McDonald’s, Sears is one of the biggest national brands most associated with the city of Chicago. Many people still refer to the soaring Willis Tower as the Sears Tower, even though the company fled the building for the suburbs nearly 20 years ago and gave up the naming rights in 2009. Now the once-great retailer is set to distance itself further from the Loop with news that it will shutter a flagship store in the city it once called home.
Sears announced yesterday that it will close its five-story location at 2 N. State St, which it opened in opened in 2001 after an 18-year absence in the area. The company had hoped at the time that it could cash in on the growing urban retail market, but in spite of the fact that other brands like Target have been able to make a go in the Loop, shoppers did not support Sears.
“(We) can no longer continue to support the store’s operating losses,” a company rep explains to Crain’s Chicago Business. “The State Street store’s operational performance has been poor through much of its existence.”
Liquidation of the store merchandise will begin on Jan. 26, with 160 employees set to lose their jobs because of the closing. Sears says it will allow these workers to apply for jobs at other Sears and Kmart locations.

Sabtu, 08 Maret 2014
di 18.00 0 komentar Label: 2, and, microsoft, pro, surface, unveiledAs expected Microsoft is also launching a new lineup of Surface accessories including a new Type Cover with backlit keys.
Microsoft Surface 2
The new Surface 2 slate is powered by NVIDIA’s latest Tegra 4 chipset with a quad-core 1.7GHz Cortex-A15 processor, GeForce 72-core GPU and 2GB of RAM. The display also got a major upgrade: it’s now a 10.6″ ClearType 1080p display with 5-point multi-touch support. According to Microsoft the Surface 2 is up to 4x faster than the original Surface slate, offers 25% more battery life (10 hours of video playback, 7-15 days on stand-by), and features a 5x better camera and 2x faster bus and Wi-Fi speeds.
The rest of the Surface 2 specs include Wi-Fi a/b/g/n support, Bluetooth 4.0, an USB 3.0 port, microSD card support, HDMI port and a 3.5mm audio jack. There are also a 3.5MP front-facing camera (1/3″ sensor size) plus a 5MP rear camera, both capable of 1080p video recording (stereo audio).
The Surface 2 features an even better 2-stage kickstand.
The Surface 2 is made entirely of Magnesium and should endure a few drops on the ground.
Microsoft is giving you 1-year of free international calls and Wi-Fi through Skype, 200GB SkyDrive storage for two years with instant sync of your files, and, of course, Microsoft Office 2013 RT edition (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook).
The new Surface 2 is thinner and lighter and will be available in 32GB and 64GB version. The suggested retail prices are $449 for the 32GB model and $549 for the 64GB one and it will hit shelves worldwide on October 22.
Microsoft Surface 2 Pro
The Surface Pro also got a proper upgrade. It uses the same 10.6-inch 1080p display the Surface 2 utilizes, but runs on fourth-generation Intel Core i5 chipset with a dual-core 1.6GHz processor (max turbo clock 2.6GHz) with multi-threading, Intel HD Graphics 4400, and 4GB or 8GB LPDDR3 RAM. There is also support for pen-input and the Surface Pen is included within the Surface 2 retail package.
As advertized by Microsoft the Pro 2 slate has 50% faster graphics, 20% better performance, 75% more battery life and 50% more color accuracy on the display compared to the previous generation Surface Pro.
The rest of the Surface 2 Pro specs include 3xUSB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, a microSD card slot, mini DisplayPort, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and a 3.5mm audio jack. There are also two 720p cams – one at the back and one at the front, and stereo speakers. Finally, the new 2-stage kickstand is also here.
Microsoft will be selling the Surface 2 Pro in 64GB, 128 GB, 256GB, and 512GB versions. All Surface 2 Pro models run on the latest Windows 8.1 Pro version, with 1 year of free international calls and Wi-Fi via Skype, 200GB SkyDrive storage for two years and one-month free trial of Microsoft Office 365 package.
Surface 2 Pro will go on sale on October 22. The 64 GB model costs $899, 128GB price is $999, the 256GB edition is $1299 and t
he 512GB Surface 2 Pro is priced at $1799. We guess these prices are for the 4GB Surface 2 Pro slates, and you’ll have to add a good $100 more if you want 8GB of RAM.Both devices can be pre-ordered right now and they will be shipping for international markets on the 22nd of October

Nokia MWC 2014 event scheduled for February 24
Jumat, 07 Maret 2014
di 22.45 0 komentar Label: 2014, 24, event, february, for, mwc, nokia, scheduledReading "Meet us under the tree," the press invite carefully keeps Nokias cards close to its chest and doesnt reveal anything. Its possible for the company to be having a word play with "tree" standing for three smartphones.
In fact there are rumors floating about for three new additions to the Lumia family: the 1520V, 1525 and 1820. The Lumia 1520V is rumored to be a 4.3" smartphone with a design similar to that of the Lumia 1520 (hence the name). With a 1080p resolution, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, the Lumia 1520V is set to rival the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact and will feature a Snapdragon 800 chipset like its bigger brother, the Lumia 1520.
The mini Lumia 1520V is also said to pack a 14MP camera at the back with a 3,000mAh battery capable of wireless charging. Moreover, its believed to debut the Windows Phone 8.1 operating system, but for now those remain unfounded rumors.
Onto the Nokia Lumia 1820, which is expected to feature the latest Snapdragon 805 chipset with 3GB of RAM and a 5.2" display of 2K resolution. The juicy configuration is going to draw power from a 3,400mAh battery. The internal storage is going to be 32GB with no microSD card to be making its way to the rumored phone just yet.
The rumor mill reckons the Lumia 1525 phablet is going to be the third phone of the family thatll make it to MWC 2014. At this point, there arent much rumors to paint a picture for it, but its believed to be a 6" phablet.
Lastly, theres the highly anticipated Android smartphone from Nokia codenamed Normandy. Its been leaking extensively with live photos and UI screenshots, but nobody knows if Nokia will unveil it at MWC 2014. The Mobile World Congress saw Nokia make a bang in 2012 with the 808 PureView cameraphone, so why not shock the world again in 2014 with an Android phone?
The Nokia Normandy is said to run Android 4.4.1 KitKat and pack a 854 x 540 resolution display. Its also hinted by the leaked UI screenshots to boast dual-SIM functionality.
You can bet well be there to cover everything that Nokia has to offer in Barcelona this February. Tune in for extensive coverage from the MWC 2014 showroom floor next month!
